Sharia 1, Free Speech, 0 — York Regional Police indulge in censorship

May 6th, 2013

The behaviour of a Muslim officer with the York Regional Police has, it seems, not only embarrassed the department, but also offended at least some in the Muslim community.

YRP Insp. Ricky Veerappan, who’s in charge of the force’s so-called diversity, equity and inclusion bureau (who dreams up this ridiculous agencies and their self-righteous titles?) apparently didn’t like the idea of a department chaplain, Rabbi Mendel Kaplan, inviting controversial American commentator Pamela Geller to address a local synagogue.

Pro-abortion businessman charged for throwing hot coffee on pro-life protesters

April 6th, 2013

Full disclosure — I’m a pro-life supporter. I’m not overly supportive of some pro-life demonstrators using signs of aborted fetuses to get their point across, however, I believe in free speech, and everyone’s equal right to it.

Free speech can be tough to tolerate sometimes, but as long as the law isn’t broken, violence isn’t threatened, and assaults don’t ensue, I’m for it.

I know a vast majority of pro-choice people would never assault anyone, but we all must encourage free speech.

Anti-Islamist blogger killed in Bangladesh: police

February 16th, 2013

Ahmed Rajib, 35 — better known by his online identity Thaba Baba.

Dhaka: A blogger who had been critical of Bangladesh’s Islamist groups was killed in the capital late on Friday, police said, a day after he attended a big rally against leaders of the country’s largest Islamic party.

Protests championed by the country’s bloggers have seen thousands of people take to the streets demanding the execution of leaders of the Jamaat-e-Islami party who are under trial for war crimes.

Clashes between police and Islamist protesters demanding the trials be halted have also rocked the capital.

Police found the body of Ahmed Rajib, 35 — better known by his online identity Thaba Baba — near his home in Dhaka’s Pallabi suburb, with his head hacked apart with a machete.

February 9th, 2013

A Cairo court on Saturday ordered the government to block access to the  video-sharing website YouTube for 30 days for carrying an anti-Islam film, but  the ruling can be appealed and based on precedent may not be enforced.

Judge Hassouna Tawfiq ordered YouTube blocked for carrying the film, which he  described as “offensive to Islam and the Prophet (Muhammad).” He made the ruling  in the Egyptian capital where the first protests against the film erupted last  September before spreading to more than 20 countries, killing more than 50  people.
